Set The Standard For Success – Breakthroughs Are Possible

Roger Bannister was the first man to ever run a mile in under 4 minutes. Well before he ever accomplished this feat, he openly proclaimed that he would do it. He set his mind on it. Roger Bannister was not the most fit or athletic person in the world. He simply knew that he wanted to run a mile in less than 4 minutes. And he did.

Roger Bannister Breaks 4-minute mile picture

Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile… and now high school kids can do it. What changed?

What’s incredible about Bannister’s accomplishment is that within nine months 36 other people ran a mile in under 4 minutes. In the last 5000 years of recorded history, no man had run a mile in under 4 minutes EVER. And then all of sudden nearly 40 people did jus that in less than a year.

That is the power of knowing what you want. Today, even some high school students have run a mile in under 4 minutes.

Before Bannister ran the mile in under 4 minutes many people said that a human being was incapable of running that fast. They said your heart would stop if you ran that fast. Maybe people had been saying that for thousands of years. Maybe that’s why no one ever ran a mile in under 4 minutes. But all it took was one man to say “I want it and I will do it.” That is the power of setting goals and committing to action.

The problem many of us face is we have notes on our desks that say things like, “I need to get diapers for Tommy after I pick up McDonald’s for dinner and go to the dry cleaner.”

We know how to take care of errands, but have we accomplished something great with our life?

Have we made a difference in the world?

Are we living up to our real potential?

Or are we just settling for an average life?

As Confucius said, “A man who shoots at nothing is sure to hit it.” Don’t let that be you.

All I’m saying is that I’d rather aim for trillionaire and settle for millionaire than aim for nothing and stay broke all my life. How about you?

Please Stop Leaving Me 5-Star Reviews On!

Someone posted earlier in the Number One Book Club about skewing reviews and always giving other authors in the community 5 star reviews (see the post here) but I think this point can’t be reiterated enough!

Take, for example, one of my new books – Dr. Corson’s Top 5 Nutrition Tips – I posted in a few groups here that the book was free and I was looking for reviews and I got 11 5-star reviews. Now, some of you might think “O god! I wish I had 11 5-star reviews” but trust me, you don’t. The book hasn’t sold more than 3 copies despite receiving over 1800 free downloads during its promo. And the reviews mostly look very lame like they were written by my mom or best friend.

When a REAL CUSTOMER is looking to buy a book, they actually read reviews. And when all the review says is “Yeah this book is AWESOME!” and there’s no substance to the review, readers don’t buy.

All this trading 5-star reviews is not only unethical, it’s frickin’ killing your sales.

Every time another author here tells me “i reviewed your book, can you please review mine?” it just doesn’t FEEL right at all! There are even threads in the Amazon customer forums about how authors should NEVER do that. They call these “shill reviews.” LISTEN TO THE CUSTOMERS!

Seriously, if you’re going to review a book of a fellow author, there should be a few criteria that we all agree to:

Rules For Amazon Book Reviews

1) You’re actually interested in reading the book.

I don’t read books about sewing, I never would, I never will. Period. Why should I change that because someone reviewed my book?? Honestly, I’d rather saw my arm off than read a book about sewing (no offense to people who love sewing, it’s just not my thing. I’d happily, however, give my mom a book on crocheting because she loves it).

2) You are going to leave an honest review.

Why lie? Why tell people the book is awesome if you don’t even like it? If the formatting sucks? If there are typos everywhere? If the information is garbage? Just leave an honest review. Honestly, I’d rather have a well-written detailed one-star review than all these empty 5-star reviews.

3) You’re not expecting anything in return.

Seriously. There’s enough people in this one little community to find the other few authors who are ACTUALLY INTERESTED in your book about how to keep your clothes clean. You don’t have to go force everyone else to leave a 1-sentence 5-star review (because it’s not even going to help your sales in the first place).

4) Because you want to help THE CUSTOMERS find the right book.

Customers read reviews to make buying decisions. You should provide information in your review that helps them do that.

I hope this post will help improve the quality of reviews for all of us authors and save us all from a lot of wasted time reading books we really hate and should never have picked up in the first place.

Life is too short to read books you’re not interested in!

I’ll be honest – it’s uncomfortable to tell someone you don’t want to read and review their book because you’re not interested in the topic even though they read and reviewed yours. But in the end, it’s the right thing to do. And customers know that – they even check to see if the you reviewed the book of the people who reviewed yours, and if so, they know those reviews are tainted.

Is it okay to swap reviews between fellow authors? Sure! Just be honest about it and put some heart into it instead of just an empty 5-star review because you didn’t want to hurt someone’s feelings.

How To Start a Blog That Matters Review

So I found an AMAZING blog training course. It’s called How To Start a Blog That Matters and I’ve created 13 review videos about it that you can check out below that cover the 13 weeks of training.

The course was designed by Corbett Barr, the founder of Think Traffic, one of the top blogs in the online marketing space. He has several successful blogs that get a over 100,000 visitors a month combined. And he earns a great income from his blogs – cool?

So if you want to learn how to start a blog that matters I highly recommend his course.

I like the course because it actually teaches the real no-BS way to build a successful blog. It’s not about automated software, autoblogging, spamming or any of that crap that other internet marketers like to do.

In the course, Corbett actually interviews Leo Babauta, the founder of the Zen Habits blog, one of the top 100 blogs in the world! Leo talks about what he did that made his site so successful early on – and it has nothing to do with automated software, spamming or “keyword research.” It’s all about creating GREAT content and helping your readers solve a problem!

There is no shortcut to success when it comes to online marketing or blogging. Anyone who wants to get rich in this business has to do it by helping the customer get what they want. If you can do that, you’re golden.

Why Not Go For Success?

Why Not?

History is full of examples of great people who decided what they wanted and made it happen.

Andrew Carnegie wrote on a small note and kept it in his desk over the years a simple message that shows how powerful writing down your intentions and goals really is.

Carnegie wrote, “I will spend the first half of my life making money, and the second half giving it all away.”

And that’s exactly what he did. Carnegie gave away over $350 million in his lifetime by the time he died in 1919. That was back when money was money. I mean, $350 million back then is equivalent to more than $10 billion today.

Why not go for more success in your life?

He was the one of the greatest philanthropists in the history of the world. Why? Because he wanted to be. That was his goal. That was his dream.

I’m not saying you should be a philanthropist. Personally, I want to give away hundreds of millions of dollars to worthy causes in my lifetime. But I’m not asking you to adopt MY goals and dreams – all I’m asking is that you find your own.

Be a good student, but don’t just be a follower. Learn everything you can but make your own decisions.

Don’t try to live someone else’s life – this is YOUR LIFE. Make it be what you want it to be. Screw what everyone else thinks. They can plan their own lives – but not yours. Your life is for you to live and you alone. And at the end of the day what you do with it is entirely up to you.

What Is A Twitter Hashtag For?

A lot of people who are new to Twitter have been asking “What’s the point of Twitter hashtags?”

Well, a Twitter hashtag # is used to track conversations on Twitter. Basically, a mention is when someone mentions you on Twitter directly in a public Tweet by using the at sign – @. But for conversations between multiple people, it becomes impossible to mention every single person in every Tweet – so the alternative for bigger conversations is to used the hashtag symbol.

That’s at least how it started. Now, hashtags can be used to track conversations as well as get your Tweets noticed by more people. For example, if you’re into marketing and use the hashtag #marketing in a Tweet, you’re likely to have a lot more people read that Tweet because people who are interested in #marketing will be able to read your Tweet too!

I made a tutorial video as well below for more info on Twitter hashtags. Enjoy!

Success: Begin With The End In Mind!

Have you ever been with someone and asked “what do you want to do?” and they respond “I don’t know.”

How lame is that?

These are the kind of people that go through their day like the walking dead. This is the kind of nonchalant attitude you need not accept if you want to be successful. Avoid the quiet, boring march to death and decide what you REALLY want to do with your life!

Now I’m not saying you’re a bad person if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. All I’m saying is you better spend some time thinking about it instead of watching TV or you’ll end up like the other broke people who watch TV all day, wishing they had those nice cars and mansions they always see on VH1.

Success picture

To be successful begin with the end in mind!

Every rich person I’ve ever met had a vision for their life – a calling to do something unique. Some wanted to be artists, actors, entrepreneurs, teachers… they all had a dream. What’s your dream?

Society does a good job of suppressing people today. The average child hears no at least 400 times a day!

“You can’t do that” is said much too often while “you can do it” has been converted into a cliché slogan which many people ignore. Stop listening to negative people. It is undoubtedly true that if someone else can become rich, you can too. You CAN become rich. Anyone can. It’s all about your choices.

Successful people know what they want.

Bob Proctor says “if you can show me what you want, I can show you how to get it.”

Why does Bob make this incredible promise? Because it’s true! If you actually know what you want and are committed to it, you will get it.

I can show you how to get rich but I can’t tell you why you should do what it takes to get rich. Your desire is a key ingredient that can come only from you. You must decide to become rich. You must also decide why you want to become rich.

What are your reasons for achieving great things? Why try that hard? Why get up that early?  Why stay up that late? Why live the life of your dreams?
